Niagara Sports Injury Treatment

My name is Dr. Patrick Maddalena (seen below) I am the treating sports chiropractor at Accelerated Health & Wellness Centre. We treat all sports injuries and are the leading rehabilitation centre for professional and amateur athletes in the Niagara Region.

When I am not treating patients, I am playing professional lacrosse in the National Lacrosse League. I am an 11 year veteran and have played sports my whole life. With my extensive experience I have come across every sports injury from rotator cuff injuries, back pain, ankle sprains, knee sprains, You name it I have treated it.

Sports Medicine I have a strong passion for treating athletes not only because I am an athlete and love sports, but chiropractic helped me get back to the ice as a hockey player when I was 7 years old. I fractured my clavicle (collarbone) and my Chiropractor used a device called the activator to adjust my thoracic spine (mid-back) and neck. Chiropractic helped me get back to the Ice in 3 weeks. From that time, I have used chiropractic to stay healthy and one step ahead my competition.

I use that same philosophy with treatment. We focus on helping athletes became pain free as quickly as possible but more importantly, we try to make our athletes stronger than when they came into the office. We focus on various treatment options coupled with soft tissue release and rehabilitative exercises to make our athletes stronger and ready to get back to their sport.

Call us to get you back to your sport as quickly as possible. Same day appointments are available. Please review the list of professional athletes successfully treated:

Mat MacLeod, Toronto Rock Lacrosse Player

"As a professional and Major lacrosse player, I am constantly playing and training all season long with minimal rest. A few years ago I developed plantar fasciitis, and I was unable to even walk without pain. Last year while I was playing with the Orlando Titans, teammate Dr.Pat Maddalena provided me with a pair of custom orthotics. Within a month I was able to run pain free. I still continue to wear the same pair of orthotics during games and throughout everyday activities."

Ryan Boyle, All American Princeton University, Member of the Orlando Titans professional Lacrosse Team, Neck Pain.

"I have always found Dr. Maddalena's work extremely helpful in maintaining my body's health and well-being before and after the rigors of a professional lacrosse game. I put my body through a considerable amount of stress and Pat's adjustments allow me to prepare or recover faster and more effectively."

Paul Bissonette, Member Phoenix Coyotes in the NHL, Low Back Pain.

“I came to Pat in the summer of 2009 for treatment because he was a professional athlete himself. I saw him and got out of pain in a few treatments, more importantly he gave me exercises to work on, which I still implement into my training. Because of treatment I was able to get out of pain and back to my pre-season treatment. Thanks Dr. Maddalena.”

Matt Vinc, Second Team all Pro in the National Lacrosse League, Foot, Knee and Chest Pain.

“I had seen Dr. Maddalena for various conditions including knee pain, chest strain and neck pain. In addition to treatment I have Dr. Maddalena do custom orthotics for Lacrosse and for my dress shoes. Both have helped me with my training.”

Rory Smith, Ontario Lacrosse Association Defensive Player of the year 2008, Shin Splints.

“In training camp for the 2009 season I had severe shin splints, to the point where I was unable to play. Dr. Maddalena did customize orthotics with a full examination and I was able to get back to playing pain free. I still wear the orthotics and my shin splints have never come back.

Sean Bentivolio, Draft Pick New York Islanders in the NHL, ankle pain.

“I was referred to Dr. Maddalena because he was a professional athlete and had laser therapy at his clinic. In regards to my injury I had a partial tear to a ligament in my ankle. I was able to make a full recovery without surgery. Each treatment we worked on laser therapy, ultrasound, soft tissue release (similar to ART) and exercise therapy”.

Josh Moes, Niagara Ice Dogs hockey player in the OHL, Spondylolisthesis and Rotator cuff Strain.

“For years I suffered from low back pain as a result of a grade II spondylolisthesis (which is anterior slippage of the vertebrae in my low back) until I saw Dr. Maddalena. On my initial consultation we ordered X-rays which Pat went over in great detail. We started laser therapy, flexion decompression therapy, soft tissue release and exercises right away. I have to stay on my exercises but my low back has never felt this good.”

Acute Athletic Injuries

Acute injuries respond well to low intensity laser treatment. It is important to contact the clinic immediately following an injury to ensure a timely treatment plan and return to activity schedule.

Muscles, Tendons and Ligaments

Strains

Strains, pulls or tears of muscles and/or tendons. They are usually caused by overexertion (for example, when several muscles hurt after a strenuous practice, athletic game or long hike). The usual cause of muscle strain is forceful contraction, (tightening) of the muscle during an activity. For example, it might happen when you run, jump, throw, or lift a heavy object.

Sprain

a sprain is an injury that causes a stretch or a tear in a ligament. Ligaments are strong bands of tissue that connect bones at a joint. Sprains can be classified as mild or severe, depending on the amount of ligament damage, or may be graded I, II, or III depending on their severity:

  • Grade I sprain: pain with minimal damage to the ligaments
  • Grade II sprain: more ligament damage and mild looseness of the joint
  • Grade III sprain:complete tearing of the ligament and the joint is very loose or unstable.
